I'm doing an essay on 'The Early Purges' by Seamus Heaney and i basicly understand most of the techniques in the poem.
Exept i'm confused on the line where it says 'living displaces false sentiments'
I get that you can't really be sentimentle on a farm because there's things that just need to be done, but is that all this means? Or is it something more...
Any advice would be helpful :)What does 'Living displaces false sentiments' mean ?
Those who aren't living on a farm in town and don't have to contend with the day to day farm life, have a different sentiment about killing animals - they consider it cruel.
Even when the young boy first saw the kittens killed, it made him feel bad. But on the farm, that is false sentiment, because it is part of the daily farm life. The more he saw this type of thing, the more desensitized he got to it. He lost his aversion to it.
I think you are right in your comment, and I also think the young boy lost a part of his innocenceWhat does 'Living displaces false sentiments' mean ?
As you live, you learn that everything has a purpose and that to be sentimental about them is false. They must come and go that life may be lived.(On a farm, a pet is only meat for the slaughter house)
living and being alive helps you move past false people and assumptions (sentiments)
